Birth defect risk rises with some fertility treatments

A doctor fertilizes a woman's eggs in an in-vitro procedure designed to overcome infertility. A new study suggests that some assisted reproduction techniques carry a higher risk of birth defects in the children produced. Test-tube babies have higher rates of birth defects, and doctors have long wondered: Is it because of certain fertility treatments or infertility itself? A large new study from Australia suggests both may play a role.
